Meet the 2024 Studio Artists
Wolf Trap Opera selects a group of 16-20 Studio Artists each year—singers of significant potential who are either currently or recently enrolled in a university or conservatory voice program. During this important transition period in their professional lives, Wolf Trap Opera cultivates these young artists by providing skill-enhancing and career-building curriculum designed around their unique needs. Studio Artists gain professional experience by covering their colleagues in the Filene program, and by singing smaller roles and choruses for Wolf Trap Opera’s main-stage operas, as well as their own opera scenes programs, and other recitals.
Offstage, Wolf Trap Opera Studio Artists participate in studio classes, seminars and workshops designed especially for them. Studio Artists work with visiting guest artists as well as with the WTO music staff to advance their audition and performance techniques and personal artistry. Other subjects covered may include, use of language, diction, recitative, acting and improvisation, audition preparedness, stage combat, dance, and the business aspects of being a singer.
All casting assignments for Studio Artists will take into account the singer’s current readiness and will be made with an eye toward principles of healthy vocalism, education, and advancement. Studio Artists must have technical foundations secure enough to allow them to spend the duration of the program away from their regular voice teachers. If you have already finished graduate work and/or done several young artist programs, you may qualify for the Filene Young Artist program.
