Celebratory Final Season Curated by Renowned Artistic Advisor, Wu Han
Vienna, Virginia (August 8, 2024) – Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts presents the 2024-2025 Chamber Music at The Barns season, curated for the final time by illustrious classical pianist and Artistic Advisor Wu Han. Wu Han has served as the artistic advisor at The Barns at Wolf Trap for the past five seasons, bringing her emblematic expertise and passion to the series. During her tenure as artistic advisor, audiences for chamber music performances have grown significantly with an 81% increase in attendance.
“It has been an honor to curate Chamber Music at The Barns for the past five years and I am very proud of the vibrant community of chamber music enthusiasts we’ve created. Wolf Trap has been a wonderful part of my artistic life that I will cherish forever,” said Wu Han, Artistic Advisor, Chamber Music at The Barns.
The season opens with The Barns at Wolf Trap debut by acclaimed young ensemble Viano Quartet (Oct 27) in a stunning program of Debussy, Dvořák, and up-and-coming local composer Alistair Coleman. Spanning the series are performances of five internationally renowned wind players in Virtuoso Winds—flutist Adam Walker, oboist James Austin Smith, clarinetist David Shifrin, bassoonist Marc Goldberg, and horn player Radek Baborák—along with pianist Anne-Marie McDermott. They will join together in various configurations to present a program of chamber music for winds, culminating in Poulenc’s Sextet (Nov 10); an evening with one of opera’s fastest-rising talents and Wolf Trap Opera alumnus (FA 2014), countertenor John Holiday (Jan 19), in a program of diverse works by Price, Bonds, Robert L. Morris, and more; a real-life connection of two great concert pianists Alessio Bax & Lucille Chung (Mar 2) displaying their virtuosity in works by Busoni, Poulenc, and more; and international violin and piano sensations Julia Fischer & Jan Lisiecki (Mar 26) promising an evening of exceptional musical collaboration.
In her final season as Artistic Advisor, Wu Han performs in two Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS) programs: Wu Han, David Finkel & Arnaud Sussmann (Feb 16) showcasing a program of piano trios and Wu Han returns for an eclectic evening of works that display a distinct combination of strings, concluding with Schubert’s magnificent “Trout” Quintet (Mar 16). The Chamber Music at The Barns season is rounded out with two additional CMS programs of stirring sonatas by Mozart, Grieg, Fauré, Prokofiev, with a stellar line up of artists including pianist Orion Weiss and violinist Paul Huang (Apr 4) and concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence featuring an exceptional ensemble including David Finckel (Apr 25).
